Question
You have two parallel infite planes, spaced 1m apart. One has a charge per unit area of -400nC/m^2 , the other has a charge per unit area of +200nC/m^2.
a)What is the electric field half way between the two planes? And 2m above the positive plane?
b)What is the total charge of a circular section of both planes with a radius of 0.3m?
c)You make a cylindrical Gaussian surface whose flat top and bottom are parallel with your planes and has a radius of 0.3m and a length of 2m. You place the center of your cylinder at the midpoint between the two planes. What is the total flux through the surface?
Explanation / Answer
a) from each E = sigma/(2 e0)
so E total = (400.0E-9-200.0E-9)/(2*8.85E-12)= 1.13E4 N/C
will be constant throughout so answer for both is 1.13E4 N/C
b) Q = sigma A = (-400+200)*pi*0.3^2= -56.5 nC
c)netflux = qenc/e0 = -56.6E-9/8.85E-12= -6395
