Question

In the figure, three 4.13 kg spheres are located at distances d1 = 0.870 m, and d2 = 0.552 m. What are the (a) magnitude and (b) direction (relative to the positive direction of the x axis) of the net gravitational force on sphere B due to spheres A and C?

In the figure, three 4.13 kg spheres are located at distances d1 = 0.870 m, and d2 = 0.552 m. What are the (a) magnitude and (b) direction (relative to the positive direction of the x axis) of the net gravitational force on sphere B due to spheres A and C?

Explanation / Answer

F = G*m1m1/d^2

The force due to the sphere at C on B is
G *4.13^2 / 0.552^2 = 55.978 G and is directed toward BC

The force due to the sphere at A on B is
G *4.13^2 / 0.87^2 =22.535G and is directed toward BA

Resultant of these two is

G sqrt[ (22.5352) + 55.978^2)]

= 60.34*G

= 4.025
