Explanation / Answer

The dopamine hypothesis suggest that excess of dopamine in certain regions of the brain is linked to schizophrenia. The mesolimbic pathway is associated with the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations and delusions, and the mesocortical pathway may be responsible for the negative symptoms, such as social withdrawal and anhedonia. The brain volume of those suffering from schizophrenia, especially in the gray matter area have seen to be reduced. Schizophrenia has a genetic basis, twin studies have shown high concordance in monozygotic twins, and a person is more at risk when he/she is more closely related to person suffering from schizophrenia.
