Question
Two plane mirrors stand facing each other, 3.22 m apart, and a woman stands between them. The woman faces one of the mirrors from a distance of 1.15 m and holds her left arm out to the side of her body with the palm of her hand facing the closer mirror.
A). What is the apparent position of the closest image of her left hand, measured perpendicularly from the surface of the mirror in front of her?
b) What is the position of the next closest image?
C) What is the position of the third closest image?
D) Which of the images are real and which are virtual? (Select all that apply.)
the closest image is real
the second closest image is real
the third closest image is real
the closest image is virtual
the second closest image is virtual
the third closest image is virtual
Explanation / Answer
a) first would be 1.15 behind that closest meirror so -1.15 m
b) next will be image from far mirror so that is a distance 3.22-1.15 =2.07 m
so will be 2.07 m behind that mirror so distance from close mirror = 2.07+3.22 = 5.29 m
c) next is image on the far mirror of the close image
so it is a distance 3.22 + 1.15 = 4.37 m from far mirror so image will be 4.37 m behind that mirror
so distance = 4.37+3.22 = 7.59 m
d) al images are virtual
