Question

For each statement, decide whether it is always true, always false or tine in certain circumstances. State which case applies to the statement, describing why you chose the answer you did and cite an experiment or principle of Physics which supports' your claim. Two identical solenoids are stacked one on top of the other with a straight iron rod filling the cores. The bottom solenoid is connected to a power supply and driving a current counterclockwise around the solenoid, as seen looking down from above. When the voltage from the power supply is increasing, the induces cunent in the top solenoid flows counterclockwise. When the current in the lower solenoid is constant, the current in the upper solenoid is equal and opposite to it. Coils A and B are both flat, circular coils. If coil A has 5 turns and an area of 15cm2 and coil B has 15 turns and an area of 5cm2, they will have the same inductance. If the two coils are rotated about an axis in the plane of the coils and they are in the same uniform magnetic field, coil B must rotate faster to induce the same potential as coil A because of the smaller flux through the smaller area. An electric potential will be generated in a coil placed in a magnetic field. The potential will be greater if the coil is rotated or its area is changed.

Explanation / Answer

1 F it will be in clockwise direction according to lenz law B IS INCREASING IN upper direction so to decrease the flux I should flow in clockwise in upper solenoid

2 F if I in bottom solenoid is constant flux through above solenoid will be constant so no current will flow

3 T because INDUCTANCE is N*A

4 F because emf =N*A dB /dt for both N*A is same

5 F change in flux create potential so by changing area or rotating it CAN change the flux but if b is constant in plane then flux may not change
