Question

Open Activphysics Tutorial 11.9, "Motion of a charge in an Electric Field". Complete Question 1 - 5 in the tutorial and use what you have learned to answer the following questions: Reset the simultion and return the X-component velocity to +5.0 x 10^6 m/s. Now, if you increase the electric field from +2.0 kV/m (+2.0 kN/C) to +4.0 kV/m, how does that affect :

(a) the electron's acceleration in the x-direction

(b) the electron's acceleration in the y-direction ( how can you test this?)

(c) the time of flights?

Explanation / Answer

a) The electron's acceleration in x direction will increase.

b) The electron's acceleration in y direction will not increase.

Since elctric field is increased in x direction only.

c) As time of flight depends on y value, no change in y scceleration will result no change in time of flight.

No change in time of flight will imply no acceleration along y.(for second part of (b))
