Question
No currents flow in the circuit before the switch is closed. Consider all circuit elements to be ideal. (Let V = 49 V, L = 17 mH, R1 = 26 k?, and R2 = 2.9 k?.)
(a) At the instant the switch is closed, what are the values of the currents I1 and I2, the potential differences across the resistors, the power supplied by the battery, and the induced emf in the inductor?
(b) After the switch has been closed for a long time, what are the values of the currents I1 and I2, the potential differences across the resistors, the power supplied by the battery, and the induced emf in the inductor?
Explanation / Answer
1)a)at the instance the switch is closed, the change in current across the inductor is very high, so it provodes infinite resistance to the flow pof current . so I2=0
I2=v/r
=49/26
=1.88*10^-3 A
b)after the switch is closed for a very long timwe , the pd across the inductor is 0,so
i1=49/26
=1.88*10^-3 A
by KVL,
i2=49/2.9 =16.89*10^-3 A
PD across the 26 kohm=ir
=49 V
pd across 2.9 k ohm=ir
=49 V
pd across the inductor=0
