Question

An object that is located 16.0 cm in front of a concave mirror has an image located 48.0 cm behind the mirror.

a) Determine the focal length of this mirror.

b) Determine the radius of curvature of this mirror.

c) Determine the magnification of the image.

d) Is this image real or virtual? Upright or inverted? Justify your answers.

e) Draw a ray diagram roughly to scale showing the situation described above. Include the object, the image, the mirror and all three principal rays. The diagram should be at least half a letter-size page in size to get full credit. (3 pts)

f) If the object is moved to a distance of 36.0 cm in front this mirror, where will the image now appear? Is this new image real or virtual? Upright or inverted? show stepwise answer, ill give 5 starts :)

Explanation / Answer

a) 1/i + 1/o = 1/f

1/16 + 1/-48 = 1/f

1/f = 3/48 - 1/48 = 2/48 = 1/24

f = 24 cm

b) R = 2 f = 48 cm

c) M = -i/o = 48/16 = 3

d) virtual since i<0 and upright since M>0

f) 1/36 + 1/i = 1/24

1/i = 1/24 - 1/36 = 1/72

so i = 72 cm, so real

M = -i/o = -72/36 = -2 < 0 so inverted
