Question
Two insulated wires perpendicular to each other in the same plane carry currents as shown in the figure (Figure 1) . Assume that I = 13A and d = 19cm .
Find the magnitude of the net magnetic field these wires produce at points P and Q if the 10 Acurrent is to the right.
Express your answers using two significant figures separated by a comma.
Find the magnitude of the net magnetic field these wires produce at points P and Q if the 10 Acurrent is to the left.
Express your answers using two significant figures separated by a comma.
Explanation / Answer
Using B = (muo/2pi) * (I/r)
B1 = (2 x 10^-7) 13/0.19 = 1.37 x 10^-5 T
B2 = (2 x 10^-7) 10/0.08 = 2.5 x 10^-5 T
(a)
Adding B1 and B2 (both fields out of the page)
Net B = (1.37 + 2.5) x 10^-5 T = 3.87 x 10^-5 T
(b)
Subtracting B1 from B2 (stronger field into page)
Net B = (2.5 - 1.37) x 10^-5 T = 1.13 x 10^-5 T
