Help with circuit question?
The voltage of the battery is 12 V, and the values of the resistances are: R1 = 5 ohms, R2 = 10 ohms, R3 = 15 ohms, and R4 = 20 ohms.
I'm just having trouble figuring this all out because of how it is set up. I know that R2 and R4 are parallel. Does that then put R24 in series with R1 and R3?
1. Calculate the total equivalent resistance of this circuit.
2. Calculate the current going through R1.
3. Calculate the current going through R2.
4. Calculate the voltage drop across R3.
5. Calculate the voltage drop across R4.
6. Calculate the total power dissipated in this circuit.
2 R 4 R3Explanation / Answer
R2 and R4 are in parallel. Thus R24=1/(1/10 +1/20) =20/3 ohm
Now since R24 is connected beween two points having same potential thus there will no any current through the R24.
Thus there is NO curren through R2 and R4. we can simply remove them from the circuit. Voltage drop is also ZERO.
NOW Req =1/(1/5+1/15) =15/4 ohm
Since R1 and R3 are in parallel, they have same voltage across them
Thus
Current through R1 = V/R1 = 12/5 = 2.4 Ampere
Current through R3 = V/R3 = 12/25 = 0.48 Ampere
POWER= Inet2 * Req = 2.882 * 15/4 =31.104 Joule
