Question

SHOW ALL WORK. For the wires shown in the Figure below, the wires on the left carry a current of I1 = I2 = 1.2A (out of the page), the wire on the right carries a current of I3 = 3.6 A (into the page), a = 1.73 m and b=1.0 m.

a) Find in Tesla the magnitude of the magnetic fields at point X due to the wire carrying I3.

b) Find the direction (as an angle relative to traditional positive x-direction) of the magnetic fields at point X due to the wire carrying I1.

c) Find the magnitude of the overall magnetic field due to all 3 wires at point X.

Explanation / Answer

part a)

B=u0i/2pir

r is teh radial distance

but for point X, it is not valid

so B=0

part b)

since wire carries current out of the page,so direction of magnetic field is counterclockwise

part c)

magnetic field at X is only due to wire 1, its magnirtude is

B=4*3.14*10-7*1.2/(4*3.14*1)=1.2*10-7 T
