Question

Consider the following case studies:

Patient L.B. suffered from a severe concussion and after the injury could only copy simple drawings of objects from memory, and not then when the objects were in front of her. She was capable of guiding her hand and fingers accurately towards objects.

Case W.W. sustained a loss of sensation on the left side of his body. When getting ready for work in the morning, he did not attempt to put on the left side of his clothing, and did not shave the left side of his face. He appeared unaware that anything was wrong with him.

For each: What brain region/pathway is likely injured in each case? State the name of the disorder associated with the symptoms in each case.

Explanation / Answer

Answer:
• In the first case-patient, L.B may be suffering from a neurological disorder known as constructional apraxia.
In this disorder, pateints are unable or feel difficulty in drawing and assembling the objects even they understand the procedure to complete the task and willing to do it. Constructional apraxia occurs due to damage to the parietal lobe and/or damage in left/right hemisphere.

• In another case, W.W. may be suffering from Hemispatial Neglect.
A patient becomes unable to sense the world of one side around them and they are also unaware of that something is missing.
Hemispatial Neglect occurs due to damage in brain’s right side (parietal lobe).
This part manages with the high-level processing of attention.
