Question

Consider the figure below.

(a) Find the charge stored on each capacitor in the figure shown above (C1 = 14.9 ?F, C2 = 9.38 ?F) when a 1.73 V battery is connected to the combination.

(b) What energy is stored in each capacitor?

Q1= C Q2= C Q3= C Consider the figure below. (a) Find the charge stored on each capacitor in the figure shown above (C1 = 14.9 AMuF, C2 = 9.38 AMuF) when a 1.73 V battery is connected to the combination. Q1= C Q2= C Q3= C (b) What energy is stored in each capacitor? E1 = J E2 = J E3 = J

Explanation / Answer

C1 and C2 are in parallel

Ceq = C1 + C2 = 14.9 + 9.38 = 24.28 uF

this is in series with the .3 uF

Ceq = C1C2 / C1 + C2 = 24.28 x .3 / 24.28 + .3 = 0.2963 uF

In series they have same charge

In parallel they have same voltage

so

0.3 uF and 24.28 uF will have same voltage = 1.73 V

Q = CV

charge on 0.3 and combination 24.28 will be same = 1.73 x 0.2963= 0.5125 C

Voltahe across 24.28 = Q/C = 0.02111

same voltage across C1 and C2

Q on C1 = C1V1 = 0.3145 uC

on C2 = 0.198 uC

now we have V on each

energy = .5 x cV^2
