Question
For my physics class, were doing an experiment which is titled "Work and Energy". The purpose of this lab is to explore the conservation of mechanical energy and the work energy theorem. For the procedure, we used an air track, a cart, and a photogate timer. We then recorded the average times, the final kinetic energies, final velocities, and final force with tension. Once done, we were asked a couple of questions that I'm having trouble solving. These questions are:
1) Identify the places in the experiment where energy is being transformed from one form to another or where work is causing an object to have a change in energy.
2) What other forms of energy are present in this lab? Do your dataa support the assumptions that this energy can be neglected?
3) Why do we take COS theta = 0 degrees in Procedure B? What does this assumption imply about the experimental set up?
4) Why do we take d to be the distance from the center of the cart to the photogate timer rather than from the front of the cart?
5) Why is it good to make d as large as possible?
If you need any more information from my lab to help solve these problems with me, just let me know in the answers. I will be more than happy to provide them for you. I really need help with this lab because it's one of the most important labs for this semester. Thank you!!
Explanation / Answer
1. when cart goes to a height from its intial horizontal position.
it posesses gravitational potential energy ( mgh) .
h - height differnce .
but total energy is constant.
so it P.E, comes from its kinetic energy.
same amount it gains potential energy , same amount it loses it kinetic energy.
when it goes down to some vertical height h.
it loses its potential energy( = mgh) and by the same amount its kinetic energy gets
increased.
-------------
2. for that you have to provide complete scenerio of lab experiment.
if there is some other forces like friction, air fricrion, tension etc.
then work done by them also come in action.
then work done by gravity + work done by other forces = final K.E. - initial K.E.
----------------
3. for that you have to provide complete scenerio of lab experiment.
for gravitational potential energy we need vertical height .
4.Cart is not a point object. But we treat it as point object for that we replace it by its
center of mass. that is middle point of cart.
5. cart has length also. and if d is large , then error will be less.
if you have any doubt connect with me , i'll be happy to answer ur doubts.
