Question

6. (a) A car goes over a hill which has a circular profile with radius 200 m. The
car goes at a steady speed of 20 m
s
. The driver is, of course, sitting on a
scale. Lucky for us, the scale reading is in Newtons. The scale normally
reads 700 N when the driver sits on it at rest. What does the scale read
just as the car goes over the top of the hill?
(b) The same car goes the same speed through a circular valley whose profile
has radius 200 m. What does the scale read at the bottom of the valley?

Explanation / Answer

a)

the mass of the driver m = 700 N/9.8 = 71.43 kg
When the car at the top
N = mg + mv^2/r
= 700 + (71.43)(20)^2 / 200
= 842.86 N
b)

When the car goes the valley and at the bottom
N = mg - mv^2/r
= 700 - (71.43)(20^2)/200
= 557.14 N
