You change the conditions of a clear solution of a given protein and observe the formation of a while, flocculent (fluffy, sort of) sold. Explain a simple procedure that would give preliminary indication whether the protein was denatured or just came out of solution. You change the conditions of a clear solution of a given protein and observe the formation of a while, flocculent (fluffy, sort of) sold. Explain a simple procedure that would give preliminary indication whether the protein was denatured or just came out of solution.Explanation / Answer
Consider a protein like egg albumin if it just came out of the solution , the structure of the protein is not altered. If the protein is denatured then the alpha helix and beta strands are disrupted and the protein starts to caogulate and forms a precipitate that is fluffy and white . This stage is termination stage of protein denaturation . The protein that is mentioned here is denatured that is why the nature of the protein is changed. So, the following experiment is simple and shows the process of denaturation . The protein albumin is placed in microwave for 100 degrees for 2 minutes in beaker. The protein gets denaturated and forms fluffy white soft solid , like precipitate. This solid is albumin that is denatured.
