Q2)

A ski tow operates of a 15.0 degree slope of length 300 m. The rope moves at 12.0 km/h and provides power for 50 riders at one time, with an average mass per rider of 70.0 kg. Estimate the power required to operate the tow. A small block with a mass of 0.0900 kg is attached to a cord passing through a hole in a frictionless. horizontal surface (Fig. P6.75). The block is originally revolving at a distance of 0.40 m from the hole with a speed of 0.70 m/s. The cord is then pulled from below, shortening the radius of the circle in which the block revolves to 0.10 m. At this new distance, the speed of the block is observed to be 2.80 m/s. (a) What is the tension in the cord in the original situation when the block has speed v = 0.70 m/s? (b) What is the tension in the cord in the final situ action when the block has speed u = 2.80 m/s? (c) How much work was done by the person who pulled on the cord?

Explanation / Answer

E = n*m*g*h = n*m*g*L*sin15 = 50*70*9.8*300*0.2588 = 2663052

t = s/v = 0.300/12 = 0.025hr = 90 s

P = E/t = 2663052/90 = 29.6 kW

-----------------------

a) T1 = m*v1^2/r1 = (0.09*0.7*0.7)/0.4 = 0.11025 N

b) T2 = m*v2^2/r2 = (0.09*2.8*2.8)/0.1 = 7.056 N

c) W = dK = 0.5*m*(v2^2-v1^2) = 0.5*0.9*((2.8*2.8)-(0.7*0.7))

W = 3.3075 J
