Question

**Please show all work and formulas used to gather the answers.**

An athlete with a mass of 56.0 kg is doing push-ups as shown in the figure below. The value for rW(perpendicular) is 0.95 m and the value for rR(perpendicular) is 1.70 m.

a) Assuming she moves upward at a constant speed, determine the force she must exert on the floor with each hand to do a push-up. _________N

b) The triceps muscle in the back of her upper arm with an effective lever arm of rT(perpendicular) equals 1.60 cm, as shown in the figure below, and she exerts forces on the floor a horizontal distance of r'R(perpendicular) equals 1.90 cm from the elbow joint.

Determine the force in the triceps muscle. _________N

In order to appreciate the strength of the triceps, determine the ratio of the force in the triceps muscle to her weight (in decimal form).

FT/W = _________

Explanation / Answer

a)

Here ,

let each hand exerts a force F

then , balancing moment about feet.

2*F*1.70 - 56*9.8 * 0.95 = 0

F = 153.3 N

the force exerted by each hand is 153.3 N

b)

Balancing moment about elbow ,

Ft * 1.60 - 153.3 *1.9 = 0

Ft = 182.1 N

the force in the triceps muscle is 182.1 N

Here ,

Ft/W = 182.1/(56*9.8)

Ft/W = 0.332

the ratio of the force in the triceps muscle to her weight is 0.332
