Question
consider the electric field that is constant in magnitude and direction PHYSICS 2401 Lab Homework- Electric Fields This homework will be due when you come to lab the week of September 21. Consider an electric field that is constant in magnitude and direction and points to the right, as in 1. the picture below. A pith ball of charge q = 6x10" C and mass m-0.10 kg is hung from an insulating string and is placed in the electric field. it hangs as shown in the diagram below. The magnitude of the electric field is 1000 N/C. Calculate: a) The gravitational force on the pith ball. Show your work. b) The electric force on the pith ball. Show your work.Explanation / Answer
A) gravitational force = m*g = 0.1*9.8 = 0.98 N
B) electric force is F = q*E = 6*10^-4*1000 = 0.6 N
C) T*cos(theta) = m*g......(1)
T*sin(theta) = q*E..........(2)
(2)/(1) = tan (theta)= (q*E)/(m*g) = 0.6/0.98 = 0.612
theta = atan(0.612) = 31.5 degrees
hence tension T = m*g/(cos(31.5)) = 0.98/(cos(31.5)) = 1.14 N
D) 31.5 degrees with vertical line
e) net force is sqrt(0.98^2+0.6^2) = 1.2 N
accelaration a = Fnet/m = 1.2/0.1 = 12 m/s^2
