Question

You want to build your own parallel plate capacitor so as to do away with your roommate because you can no longer stand the snoring. You get a 10ft by 10ft sheet of 10mil thick mylar. For those of you who prefer metric units, that's a 3.05m wide by 3.05m long sheet of 2.54 Times 10-4m thick plastic. The dielectric constant of mylar is 3.2. You use the mylar to separate two sheets of aluminum foil of equal size (width and length) forming a capacitor. You place this capacitor over the floor in your dorm room and charge it with a homemade Van de Graaff to its maximum voltage which the manufacturer of the mylar gives as 70.000V. How much energy does your death trap store? Select One of the Following: 0.036.1 23J 790J 830.1 2500J

Explanation / Answer

area of the plate=3.05*3.05=9.3025 m^2
distance between plates=2.54*10^(-4) m
dielectric constant=3.2

then capacitance=dielectric constant*epsilon*area/distance

where epsilon=electrical permitivity of free space=8.85*10^(-12)

putting all the values, we get capacitance=1.0372 uF

voltage=70000 volts

then energy=0.5*caapcitance*voltage^2=2541 J

hence option e is correct.
