Question
Hello, i am studying sound waves and came across this problem. however i am having trouble solving the problem. i think that it is a doppler effect type of problem but i am unsure how to solve it. Can anyone please help me solve it and show me STEP BY STEP how to do it?
Two high speed bullet trains are directly approaching each other along parallel tracks. The first train is traveling at 95 m/s and the second train is traveling at 110 m/s. The first train sounds a whistle at a frequency of 680 Hz. The whistle sound goes out and reflects off of the second train before coming back to the first train What frequency does the conductor on the first train hear for the reflected sound? (Take the speed of sound in S.Explanation / Answer
frequency fo = 680 Hz
speed of the 1st train = v1 = 95 m/s
speed of the 2nd train = v2 = 110 m/s
frequency of the sound heard by person in 2nd train
f1 = (v+v2)*fo/(v-v1)
f1 = ((330+110)*680)/(330-95) = 1273.2 Hz
(
frequency of the reflected wave heard by conductor in 1st train
f2 = (f1*(v+v1))/(v-v2)
f2 = (1273.2*(330+95))/(330-110) = 2460 Hz <<----------answer
