Question

A sheet of wood with the dimensions 3 x 1 x 0.01 m was dried from the two large surfaces (the edges can be ignored) from an initial total moisture content of 70% on a dry basis to a final average total moisture content of 15% (on a dry basis), using hot air under convection mode. In order to achieve the required moisture content reduction, the drying time was observed to be 24 hours. The drying can be considered as under a falling-rate period with internal liquid-diffusion control (within the wood sheet). The equilibrium moisture content was also determined as 7%. Estimate the diffusivity of the moisture in the wood sheet. State the assumptions (if used) in deriving the mathematical solution.
