Question

A: the electric potential V0 at the midpoint between the charges. B: the electric potential Vp at the point P, see Figure, where the distances are a=0.3m, and b=0.4m Problem 4 (10 POINTS) m a point charges @1- Q2 Using the convention that the elecric potential is zero at oo, then calculate: (a) The electric potential Vo at the midpoint between the charges. (b) The electric potential Vp at the point P a 0.3m and b = 0.4m. The electric potential Vp at the point P, see Figure, where the distances are

Explanation / Answer

(a) Q1 =7.2nC = 7.2 × 10-9 C

              Q2 = -5.4nc = -5.4 × 10-9 C

              Distance between Two charges = 0.5m

              Distance between each charge and the mid point = 0.25m

              Potential at the mid point due to Q1 charge V1 =( 1/40).Q1/r

                                                                                                =(9 ×109 ×7.2 ×109)/0.25

              Potential at the mid point due to Q2 charge V2 =( 1/40).Q2/r

                                                                                             =( 9 × 109) ×(-5.4 × 10-9)/0.25

               Potential at the mid point V0 = V1 + V2

                                                                                   =(9 ×109 ×7.2 ×109)/0.25 +( 9 × 109) ×(-5.4 × 10-9)/0.25

                                                     =(9 × 109/0.25) (7.2-5.4) × 10-9

                                                                                  = 64.8 Volts

(b) Potential Vp at P = ( 1/40).Q1/b + ( 1/40).Q2/a

                              =(9 ×109 ×7.2 ×109)/0.4 + ( 9 × 109) ×(-5.4 × 10-9)/0.3

                              =162-162

                               = 0 volts
