Question

Two boxes of fruit on a frictionless horizontal surface are connected by a light string as in the figure below, where mi = 13 kg and m2 = 26 kg. A force of F = 56 N is applied to the 26-kg block.Determine the acceleration of each block and the tension in the string.acceleration of mplus or minus acceleration of m2 tension in the stringRepeat the problem for the case where the coefficient of kinetic friction between each block and the surface is 0.10. acceleration of mplusorminus your response differs from the correct answer by more than 100%. m/s 2Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 100%. m/s2 acceleration of m2 differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations. N

Explanation / Answer

Here ,

let the acceleration of the block is a

b)

Using second law of motion

F - u * m1 * g - u * m2 * g = (m1 + m2) * a

56 - 0.1 *(13 + 26) * 9.8 = (13 + 26) * a

a = 0.46 m/s^2

hence , acceleration of m1 is 0.46 m/s^2

acceleration of m2 is 0.46 m/s^2

Now , for tension in string is T

for the block m1

T - 0.1 * 13 * 9.8 = 13 * 0.46

T = 18.7 N

the tension in the string is 18.7 N
