Question

EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION (5 POINTS) Data for the mobility of three different proteins (X, Y, and Z) using both fluorescent recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) are shown in Figure Q11-40A. bleach bleach bleach ? 8 time time ime Figure Q11-40A It is important to remember that in each of these experiments, the results reflect a real physical difference in the way in which these proteins are situated in the plasma membrane. Provide a plausible explanation for the differences observed in proteins X, Y, and Z.

Explanation / Answer

Protein X- the most mobile among all the other protein. As soon the membrane was photobleached protein molecules started to move to the photobleached area.

Protein Y- As we can see from the graph that the photobleached portion remains as such even after much time has passed. So we can conclude that protein Y is covalently attached to the membrane as it cannot move from its position to the photobleached area.

Protein Z- Protein Z can also move to the photobleached area but its mobility is lesser than protein Y. Also, the concentration of protein Y is more than that of protein X as we can see by comparing the area of the curve protein X and Z after recovery time
