Question
James and John dive from an overhang into the lake below. James simply drops straight down from the edge. John takes a running start and jumps with an initial horizontal velocity of 25 m/s. If there is no air resistance, who will have the greater speed when they hit the water? Explain your answer using projectile motion terms in CER format. You may use equations but as evidence only. The answer must be explained in words. Please type answer below and submit. Needs: Initial and final velocity in the vertical direction Initial and final velocity in the horizontal direction Use the word componentExplanation / Answer
for james
horizontal velocity = 0
vertical velocity at the begining Vx= 0
vertical velocity at the end Vy= sqrt(2*g*h)
so final velocity = sqrt [ Vx^2 + Vy^2]
V = Vy = sqrt(2gh)
for john
horizontal component Vx = 25 m/s
Vertical initial = 0
Vertical final = sqrt(2gh)
Final velocity for john = sqrt[ Vx^2 + Vy^2 ]
Final velocity for john = sqrt [ 25^2 + 2gh ]
so it is clear that john will have greater spped at the time of hitting the water
