(Note that this time difference can be very significant in competitive events so it is still worthwhile to get a running start.)

a) mgsin30 = ma

a = 9.81 x sin30 = 4.90 m/s^2

using v^2 - u^2 = 2ad

v^2 - 0 = 2 x 4.90 x 75

v =27.12 m/s ---------------final speed


using v = u + at

27.12 = 0 + 4.90t

t =5.53 sec


b) v^2 - u^2 = 2ad

v^2 - 3^2 =2 x 4.90 x 75


v =27.29 m/s

27.39 = 3 + 4.90t

t = 4.96 sec
