Part E - Design an Experiment Lactaid is a product designed to help people who cannot digest milk sugar (lactose) because they are missing the enzyme lactase. Many people are lactose-intolerant, a condition that is mainly genetic. Lactase breaks down lactose into two subunits: glucose and galactose. Lactaid To test for the presence of monosaccharides and reducing disaccharide sugars in food, the food sample is dissolved in water, and a small amount of Benedict's reagent is added. The solution should progress in the colors of blue (with no glucose present), green, yellow, orange, red, and then brick red or brown (with high glucose present) Original Design an experiment where you would determine how quickly lactaid works to break down milk sugar. Lactate contains lactase. It is an enzyme which breaks lactose into glucose and galactose. Using these simple phenomena we can measure the lactate activity.

1. Take five clean test tubes. Mark them as 1, 2, 3, 4 and five.

2. Add 10ml of milk in every test tubes.

3. Keep a stopwatch before you.

4. Add 300mg lactate tablets in each of the tube.

5. After every 30 seconds take 1ml of solution from the test tubes and pour that in fresh test tubes. Mix with 10 ml of double distilled water. Add Benedict`s reagent in the solution. Then take the OD with a UV-Visual spectrophotometer and note the visual colour change from the 1st test tube. Example- after 30 seconds take from the test tube 1, after 1 minute take from the test tube 2, after 1 minute and 30 seconds take from the test tube 3.

When the colour reaches brick red to brown you can assume that, in that time the solution contains the highest amount of glucose. So, that one is the optimum time of lactate reaction.
