Explanation / Answer

Meningitis is derived from the word meninges, which are the membranes that surround the brain and the spinal cord. It is an inflammation of these membranes due to pathogenic infection and also by drugs. In most cases the inflammation is acute and causes swelling.

Description of the infection

The most common symptom is a headache, occuring in about 90 % of the cases

the other notable symptoms are seizures, light sensitivity, stiff neck, rashes, difficulty sleeping and high fever.

The mechanism of the disease

The disease is caused when the causative agent of meningitis travels through the blood to the subarachnoid space through the blood brain barrier. Here they cause inflammation which in turn causes cerebral edema or swelling

The causative agents

Bacterial - Streptococci B, Neissieria Meningitidis, Staphylococci etc

Viral- enterovirus, herpes simplex, varicella zoster, mumps, HIV

Fungal- crytococcal meningitis.

The diagnosis is usually done by

Blood tests and imaging to identify the type of microrganism

or by means of a lumbar puncture

Treatment

For bacterial meningitis-cefotoxamine or in the case of resistance vancomycin, choramphenicol and ampicillin

For viral- acyclovir

Fungal-amphotericin B and flucytosone paired with a lumbar drain.

Prevention

Prevention can either be through antibiotics or through vaccination in the long term.
