Question

8:09 PM a Pima Community College Pima College Pima C Data to record: 1. Breathing rate before hyperventilation (breaths/min) 2. Breathing rate after hyperventilation (breaths/min)- 3. How long can you hold your breath after normal quiet breathing? 4. How long you can hold your breath after hyperventilating? The procedure: 1. First, breathe normally for 1 minute and record your breathing rate (number of breaths in one minute) 2. Then hyperventilate by breathing deeply and forcefully (deep inhalation and deep exhalation), emphasizing the exhalation (exhalation much longer than inhalation), at the rate of about 1 breath every 4 seconds for about 30 seconds. Record breathing rate (number of breaths in one minute) just after hyperventilation has been completed. Try to breath normally (i.e., do not take deep breaths at this point). 3. Rest for 3 minutes. Breathe normally. Then, take a deep inhalation, plug your nose with your fingers, and then hold your breath for as long as you can (don't cheat!). Record the number of seconds you held your breath. Do not push yourself too far. When the urge becomes very strong. and you are having to fight it, go ahead and exhale. Do not push yourself to the point that you are light-headed and on the verge of passing out 4. After resting for a minute or two, hyperventilate for 30 seconds (big inhalations and exhalations emphasizing the exhalation), then, after a strong inhalation, plug your nose with your fingers and hold your breath for as long as you can. Record the number of seconds you held your breath. Once again, do not push yourself too far. When you feel about as uncomfortable as you did in the previous procedure (without hyperventilation) go ahead and stop (ie., exhale)

Explanation / Answer

Breathing rate before hyperventilation (breath/min)= 20 breaths/min

Breathing rate after hyperventilation (breath/min)= 25 breath/min

For 60 seconds I can hold my breath after normal quiet breathing.

For 1 minute 20 seconds, I can hold my breath after hyperventilation.
