Question

Use the figure to answer the following question.

Mussels are increasing their shell thickness in response to water current. Mussels can sense the presence of crabs only visually. Without direct contact, mussels can sense the presence of crabs. Crabs hunt for mussels by focusing on the chemicals they emit into the water. Experiment Question: Are mussel defenses induced by the presence of crabs? Hypothesis: Mussels increase investment in defense in the presence of crabs Null hypothesis: Mussels do not increase investment in defense in the presence of crabs Experimental setup: Crab fed fish, not mussels) No crab Mussels Mussels Prediction: Mussels downstream of the crab tank will have thicker shells than mussels downstream of the empty tank Prediction of null hypothesis: Mussels in the two tanks will have shells of equal thickness Results: 0.6 S 0.4 0.2 No crab Crab

Explanation / Answer

Mussel are bivalve molluscans which can be from both freshwater and salt water habitat. They have asymmetrical shell which is a complex of calcium carbonate and some protein(conchin). These shells are supposed to carry out a variety of functions : 1] it supports the delicate tissues inside

2] it protects the mollusc from its predator

3] and it also prevents the mollusc from undergoing desiccation.

Hence, in the result shown the graph for shell thickness in presence of crabs (which the mussel might sense as a predator, but crabs do not feed on mussle ) is more heightened along with the presence of water currents (for protection of the delicate tissues).

Answer : “Mussels are increasing their shell thickness in response to water current.”
