Question

1,000 800 600 3. The figure to the left depicts th measured growth of twO 180 150 120 90 60 30 0 (black dots), and the predicud growth 6 400 from a logistic model (red line) Consider how the assumptions of the logistic model fit real populations based on this data. Describe at least 1 assumpion that does not fit one or both of and WHY you think that (use data from the graphs to support your thinking). (3 200 5 Time (days) 10 15 0 20 40 0 80 100 120 140 160 Time (days) (a) A Parameclum population in the lab

Explanation / Answer

In Daphnia, the measured growth is lower than the predicted growth in few parts and higher in some parts(see the black dots and red line)

The dispersion is clumped(in groups) which indicates its strong attraction to any resource availability

whereas;in paramecium the measured growth and predicted growth do not show much difference(as dots can be seen near the red line)

The dispersion in paramecium is random showing independant growth in few parts and uniform in some

The predicted carrying capacity of Daphnia is near about 135/50 ml(see the red line-where it stops)

(carrying capacity is the maximum population which can be supported by an area without any decline)

Predicted carrying capacity of Paramecium is about 900/ml

A negative curve can be seen in Daphnia populatin(see the graph from 70-105 days),so the population hereby shows that it was running out of resources

This Negative curve is not seen in Paramecium may be due to resource availability
