Question

1.Calculate the survival rate for each group in figure 1. Use the following formula: Percent survival= (surviving rabbits/ # beginning rabbits) * 100 Which group has the highest survival rate? Which group has the lowest?
2. Use your results to write an overall conclusion to the rabbit island experiment. Also develop an answer to each of Dr. Trudeau’s questions.
3. What is the dependent variables in the rabbit island experiment? Also, list all the independent variables in the experiment?
Figure 1. Analyzing the Rabbit Island Experiment 100 Group 2 80 Group 3 60 2 40 20 Group 1 0 2 4 Months Post Inoculation

Explanation / Answer

The survival rate for Group 1 was 20%, Group 2 was 100%, and Group 3 was 80%. The highest survival rate was seen in Group 2. The lowest survival rate was seen in Group 1.

Overall, Dr. Trudeau’s experiment shows that with the right conditions and healthy lifestyle tuberculosis can be controlled and maybe even stopped. On the other hand, if they were living in horrible and bad condition they can ultimately get worse and die of tuberculosis.

The dependent variable is rabbit’s survival rate in specific but different circumstances, the number of surviving rabbits. These are the measureable and observed differences. The independent variables would be the following: 1. inoculated with tubercle bacillus/healthy rabbits 2. confined or not confined 3. location of confinement 4. sun exposure 5. exposure to fresh air 6. physical activity 7. amount of food/nutrition.
