Question

Use the diagram to answer the following questions:

1) According to Kepler's Second Law, during which one of the portion of the planets orbit B, C, or D, would the planet take the same amount of time as it took for the portion of the orbit identified with the letter A. If you think all the portions of the orbit take the same amount of time answer E.

2) During what part of the planet's orbit (A, B, C, or D) would the planet move with the greatest speed?

3) During how many portions of the planet's orbit (A,B, C, and D) would the planet be speeding up the entire time?
A)only during the one of the portions shown
B) during two of the portions shown
C) during three of the portions shown
D) during all four of the positions shown
E) none of the above

4) during which of the portions of the planet's orbit would the planet experience an increase in speed for at least a moment?
A)only during the one of the portions shown
B) during two of the portions shown
C) during three of the portions shown
D) during all four of the positions shown
E) none of the above

Explanation / Answer

1) Answer for the first question is E .

Explanation: According to Keplers second law the planet sweeps out equal areas in equal intervcals of time. So all the portions of the orbit take the same amount of time.

2) during the part of the planet's orbit C the planet move with greatest speed.

Explanation: Because the velocity of the planet is inversely proportional to the square root of the radius of the orbit. in the portion C the radius is less comparitively with other portions so the speed is greatest.

3) Answer is E i.e none of the above

Explanation : As the orbital path is ELLIPTICAL PATH the the radius continuosly varies. So the velocity also continuosly changes as both are inversely proportional to each other.( as said above)

4) Answer is B i.e during the two portions of the orbit the planet experience increse in speed.

Explanation: Because the planet rotates WEST TO EAST i.e in anticlockwise direction. During the portions of A and B there is decrese in the curved path ( atleast a moment ) . Therefore a little decrease in radius then increse in speed as both are inversely proportional each other.
