Question
You and a friend get lost while hiking, so your friend pulls out a magnetic compass to get re-oriented. However, you're standing right under a power line carrying 1.9 kA toward magnetic north; it's 15 m above the compass. The horizontal component of Earth's magnetic field at your latitude points northward and has magnitude 0.24 G. By how many degrees will the compass reading be off?degrees

Explanation / Answer
magnetic field due to wire will be = miuo*I/ (2*pi*r)
and it will point to east
B (wire) = miuo*I/ (2*pi*r)
=(1.2566*10^-6)*(1.9*10^3) / (2*pi*15)
=2.53*10^-5 T
=2.58*10^-5*10000 G
=0.25 G (toward east by right hand thumb rule)
B(earth) = 0.24 G northward
It will be off by atan(0.25/0.24) = 46.2 degree towards East
