Question

You need a transformer that will draw 11 W of power from a 220 V (rms) power line, stepping the voltage down to 12 V (rms).

Part A

What will be the current in the secondary coil?

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Part B

What should be the resistance of the secondary circuit?

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Part C

What will be the equivalent resistance of the input circuit?

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

I =

Explanation / Answer

stepping the voltage down that is

V1/V2=N1/N2=I2/I1=220V/12V

I1=11W/(220 V)

=0.05A

PART A)

from the above relation I2=(220/12)*(11/220)

=0.916 A

the current in the secondary coil is 0.916A

PART B)

from ohms law

R=V/I2

=12/  0.916A

=13 ohms

the resistance of the secondary circuit is 13 ohms

PART C)R=V/I=220/(13/220)

= 3723.076 ohms
