Question

You are cleaning the windows of a 300 meter building and have made it down to within 30 meters of the ground. Unfortunately, you missed some windows at the 230 meter mark and have to raise the platform back up. How much work is required to do so if You and the platform have a combined mass of 200 kg; and The ropes have a combined density of 10 kg per meter. Note the ropes holding the platform are also attached to the building at the very top. As soon as an incremental amount of rope is raised to the top, that part isn't raised further.

Explanation / Answer

Work done is equal to change in gravitational potential energy

W = U1-U2

W = m*g*(h1-h2) = [200+(10*200)]*9.81*(230-30) = 4316400 J
