Question

Other than informing us on our gut microbiome, what could be the health-related significance of our anal microbiota?

When thinking about a part of the body that must has a very dense microbiota, the rectal cavity comes to mind; However, anal infections seem to be rare or at least less frequent than bladder and vaginal infections. I read several articles about using anal swabs to study our gut microbiota, and the attached article studies how the mouth, the cervix, and the anal cavity have very distinct populations of microbes that occupy distinct niches. What could be the health significance of the anal microbiome other than it being a continuation of the gut microbiome?
