Question
train car 1 has a mass of 1000kg and is moving at 1.8m/s along a straight track towards a stationary train car 2 of mass 2000kg. they collide perfectly inelastically and move together to the right. these cars then collide with stationary car 3 of mass 500 kg, essentially elastically. what is the final velocity of all the train cars. assume 1 and 2 stay locked together after second collision. train car 1 has a mass of 1000kg and is moving at 1.8m/s along a straight track towards a stationary train car 2 of mass 2000kg. they collide perfectly inelastically and move together to the right. these cars then collide with stationary car 3 of mass 500 kg, essentially elastically. what is the final velocity of all the train cars. assume 1 and 2 stay locked together after second collision. train car 1 has a mass of 1000kg and is moving at 1.8m/s along a straight track towards a stationary train car 2 of mass 2000kg. they collide perfectly inelastically and move together to the right. these cars then collide with stationary car 3 of mass 500 kg, essentially elastically. what is the final velocity of all the train cars. assume 1 and 2 stay locked together after second collision.Explanation / Answer
let u is the speed of two train cars after they collide perfectly inelastically
Apply conservation of momentum,
1000*1.8 = (1000 + 2000)*u
u = 1000*1.8/3000
= 0.6 m/s
let v1 is the velcoity of two train cars which are locked.
and v2 is the speed of the third tarin car.
on applying conservation of momentumand conservation of kinetic energy
we get,
v1 = ((1000 + 2000) - 500)*0.6/(1000 + 2000 + 500)
= 0.4286 m/s(car 1 and 2) <<<<<------------Answer
v2 = 2*(1000 + 2000)*0.6/(1000+2000 + 500)
= 1.0286 m/s (car 3)<<<<<------------Answer
