Question
The refrigerator has a weight of 180 lb and rests on a tile floor for which mu s = 0.25. The man has a weight of 150 lb and the coefficient of static friction between the floor and his shoes is mu s, = 0.6. If he pushes horizontally on the refrigerator, determine if he can move it. If so, does the fridge slip or tip? ON YOUR OWN PAPER, you should answer and box the following questions: What is the maximum possible force the man can generate before he slips? What force will make the fridge slip? What force will make the fridge tip? Can the man move the fridge? Will the fridge slip or tip? You may print this page for the problem statement and sketch, but you should draw FBDs and perform computations on separate engineering paper.Explanation / Answer
frcition oposing motion of refrigerator=0.25*180*32=1440
man can exert force equal to friction force on its shoes= 0.6*150*32=2880
from above it can slip but we have to checkk for topling
applied moment about G= 1440*1+1440*3=5760
resistive moment(because of normal reaction, N)=N*1.5=180*32*1.5=8640
so resistive moment is more than applied so it won't tip but it will slip
