Question

Abdulla, enjoys experimenting with light incident upon a single slits. Let's say that on this occasion, Abdulla is using light of 600nm.

Let's further say that Abdulla is blasting the slit with this light to obtain a diffraction pattern on a screen that is 0.50 m from the slit.

Abdulla measured the distance between the first and third minima of the diffraction pattern as 0.80 mm.

Now Abdulla is trying to estimate the range of values that might represent the width of the slit. What might you recommend to Abdulla and why?

Explanation / Answer

the condition for single slit diffraction is

d sin theta = m Lamda

since theta is very small

sin theta = tan theta = y/L

d ( y/L) = m * Lamda

d =  m * Lamda/ ( y/L)

for m = 1

d1 = 1* Lamda/ ( y1/L)

for m = 3

d3 = 3* Lamda/ ( y1/L)

d = d3- d1 = ( 3-1) Lamda/ ( y3- y1)/L

= 2 ( 600 nm)/0.8 mm /0.50 m

=0.750 mm

the width of the slit is very narrow
