Question

16.2 A particle of unknown mass orbits in the Earth?s magnetic field as shown below. Over the particle?s orbit the Earth?s field is uniform and the strength of the Earth?s field is B = 4 x 10^-5T. The magnetic field is perpendicular to the velocity of the particle. The particle?s trajectory is drawn bel with the magnetic field directed into the page. The charge of the particle has magnitude |q| 1.6 x 10^-9C. The radius of the orbit is 4.27m. The particle orbits in the direction drawn with velocity 1/10th the speed of light or 3x10^7 m/8. (a) What is the sign of the particles charge? Justify. (b) What it the mass of the particle? (c) what is the force (magnitude and direction) on the particle at point P? (d) identify the particle, that s report the name of an elementary particle with features consistent your calculated features of the particle.

Explanation / Answer

a) the sign of the particle is negative (-Q), as per the orbit of the particles, it takes clockwise direction, In a magnetic field the force is always at right angles to the motion of the electron (Fleming's left hand rule)

b) mass of the particle

angular velocity (w)= qB/m

w= V/r

w= 3*107/ 4.27

w= 0.7*107

m= (1.6*10-19 x 4*10-5 )/(0.7*107)

m= (6.4*10-24)/ (0.7*107)

m= 9.14* 10-31 kg

c)

The force is given by F= QVBsin (theta)

theta= 90 degree

so F=-1.6*10-19 x 3*107 x 4*10-5

F = -19.2* 10-17 N

d) based on the charge and mass of the particle, it is identified that, the particle is electron.
