Question

Consider the system shown in the figure (Figure 1) . Assume that after the string breaks the ball falls through the liquid with constant speed, the mass of the bucketand the liquid is 1.20kg , and the mass of the ball is 0.100kg .

(1)

Find the reading on the scale before the string breaks.

(2)Find the reading on the scale after the string breaks, assuming the ball falls through the liquid with an acceleration equal to 0.240G

Explanation / Answer

Before string breaks

Bouyancy force on the ball (B) + T = mg

Here m = mass of the ball = 0.1 kg

here T = tension in the string

B   = wight of the liquid in water = mg -T

The scale on the reading   = wight of the bucket + B

                                       =   (1.2 kg )(9.8 m/s^2)      + (0.1 kg )(9.8 m/s^2)     - T

                                         =( 12.74 -T )N

after the sting breake

Tension in the string T = 0

B = mg

The reading on the scale =  wight of the bucket +  weight of the ball    = 12.74N
