Question

A ray of light is incident in air on a block of a transparent solid whose index of refraction is n = 1.41.

If n = 1.41 what is the largest angle of incidence ?a, for which total internal reflection will occur at the vertical face (point A shown in the figure (Figure 1) )?

A ray of light is incident in air on a block of a transparent solid whose index of refraction is n = 1.41 If n = 1.41 what is the largest angle of incidence ?a, for which total internal reflection will occur at the vertical face (point A shown in the figure (Figure 1) )?

Explanation / Answer

I am going to guess what the figure looks like and come up with a solution. If its not correct, please comment and a fix can be made with discussing the figure

Anyway...

Start with sin(ic) = 1/1.41

ic = 45.17o

90 - 45.17 = 44.83

Then by Snell's Law

1(sin i) = 1.41(sin 44.83)

i = 83.7o
