Question

Can we blow up the Earth?

Some people believe that nuclear bombs that all countries in the world have will destroy our beloved earth if placed at the center of earth and got detonated. To know if this is true, you need to know how much energy will these nuclear bombs release if detonated, which you can find in the literature, and you also need to calculate the energy that would be required to disassemble the earth completely into pieces totally separate from each other.

Detailed explanation needed.

Explanation / Answer

The total change in potential energy as the earth disassemble into pieces completely seperated from each other will be given by:

U = 3 G M2 / 5 R

where, G is universal gravitational const. M is the mass of mother earth and R is its radius.

We have the values of G = 6.67 x 10-11 Nm/kg2

M = 5.97 x 1024 kg

R = 6378100 meters

Putting in the formula we get,

U = 3 x 6.67 x 10-11 Nm/kg2 x (5.97 x 1024 kg)2 / 5 x 6378100

U = 2.23 x 1032 Joules

Hence energy requires to destroy the mother earth completely into pieces is U = 2.23 x 1032 Joules.
