Tally Sampling is a technique used to make a note of quantitative recording of how often a targeted behavior or list of behaviors occurs. The observers use a particular grid-format to record their observation. The main purpose of using tally sampling is to make a clear objective information about how frequently certain behaviors occurs which is very useful for making observations about the patterns and identification of factors that can in turn help with developing activities, experiences and interventions.
Advantages of Tally event sampling
It helps to make a short observation to confirm a child’s behavior pattern in order to provide suitable strategies to manage the child’s behavior effectively. It is like keeping a clearly focused diary of the child’s behavior.
It helps to identify causes and effects of behavior.
Results of observation can be used to plan appropriate interventions at individual child’s developmental level.
2. Anecdotal records are usually relatively short and may contain descriptions of behaviors and direct quotes. Anecdotal records are easy to use and quick to write, so they are the most popular form of record that is used for improving a child's behavior. Anecdotal records allow educators to record qualitative information, like details about a child’s specific behavior or the conversation between two children. These details can help educators plan activities, experiences, and interventions. While ABC analysis is a specialized type of anecdotal record, where the observer selects a targeted behavior or situation, then records the Antecedents (what came before), the Behaviour, and the Consequences (what came after). Over time, the observer records a sampling of events when the targeted behavior occurred, using a specific format to organize the information which helps to identify the child's problem and plan interventions appropriately. In comparison with the above methods of event recording, tally event sampling method does not give a clear-cut information about the why such behavior is expressed by the child, whereas Anecdotal and ABC methods give descriptive information for in-depth analysis of child's behavior.
3. From the tally chart its evident that Steve snatches toys from other childer before they have finished with the toys which had the maximum recordings for the week. So we can interpret that toys as the main provocative source for Steve for developing other aggressive behaviors like shouting and hitting other children.
