Question
Read about the Diffraction Grating in the Overview for this lab in your lab manual. Suppose you are performing Activity 1-1 using a diffraction grating with 690 lines/mm. (a) What is the distance d between adjacent slits? nm (nanometers, not millimeters) (e) The expected wavelength for hydrogen's deep violet (n=6 to n=2 transition) line is 410.3 nm. At what angle do you expect to find this line's first-order maximum? ° (f) Sodium D line ( 589.3 nm) is actually two closely spaced lines, one at 589.0 nm and another at 589.6 nm. If these lines appear as their first-order maxima, how much difference in angles do you expect for the two lines? °Explanation / Answer
Part A) distance d=1449.275nm (d=1/diffraction grating)
Part B) we know that d.sintheta=n*wavelength
hence sintheta=n*wavelength/d= 1*410.3/1449.275=0.28311
finally theta=16.44 degree.
PartC) path difference dx=589.6-589.0=0.6nm
