Question
Consider the following figure.
(a) Find the equivalent resistance between points a and b in the figure. (R = 15.0 ?)
?
(b) Calculate the current in each resistor if a potential difference of 52.0 V is applied between points a and b.
Explanation / Answer
The equivalent resistance is
R_eq = ( 4.00 ohm ) + ( 9.00 ohm ) + [ ( 7 ohm)(15)/ 7 + 15 ]
= 17.77 ohm
b)
when the resistors are in series combinaton current through each resistor is same.
I _4 = I_9 = I ' = V / R_eq = 52.0 V / 17.77 ohm = 2.92 A
Voltage across R and 7 ohm resistors is
V = (2.92) ( 7*15/ 7 + 15 ) = 13.96 V
Current through 7 ohm resistor is
I = V / 7 = 13.96/ 7 = 1.99 A
Current throug h R is
I_R = 13.96 / 15 ohm = 0.93 A
