Question

An excited hydrogen atom releases an electromagnetic wave to return to its normal state. You use your futuristic dual electric/magnetic field tester on the electromagnetic wave to find the directions of the electric field and magnetic field. Your device tells you that the electric field is pointing in the negative z direction and the magnetic field is pointing in the negative y direction. In which direction does the released electromagnetic wave travel?

+x direction

?x direction

+y direction

?y direction

+z direction

?z direction

Please explain !!

Explanation / Answer

the electromagnetic wave is a transverse wave with its components (magnetic field and electric field) travel perpendicularly from one another.

using the RHR (Right hand rule)

the electric field in the -z direction will have a component in the +x direction and its the same for the magnetic field in -y direction, it will also have a component in the +x direction

The two components in the +x direction to form an electromagnetic wave travelling in the +x direction
