Question

Two ice skaters, Daniel (mass 60.0kg ) and Rebecca (mass 45.0kg ), are practicing. Daniel stops to tie his shoelace and, while at rest, is struck by Rebecca, who is moving at 12.0m/sbefore she collides with him. After the collision, Rebecca has a velocity of magnitude 8.00m/s at an angle of 53.1? from her initial direction. Both skaters move on the frictionless, horizontal surface of the rink.

Part A

What is the magnitude of Daniel's velocity after the collision?

Part B

What is the direction of Daniel's velocity after the collision?

Part C

What is the change in total kinetic energy of the two skaters as a result of the collision?

v =   m/s

Explanation / Answer

let danien's direction be at angle theta with rebecca's original direction and speed be v.

then conserving momentum along perpendicular to rebecca's original direction:

0=45*8*sin(53)+60*v*sin(theta)

v*sin(theta)=-4.79

conserving momentum along rebecca's original direction:

45*12=45*8*cos(53)+60*v*cos(theta)

v*cos(theta)=5.39

so theta=-41.63 degrees

v=7.21 m/s
